BRINGING HISTORY TO LIFE
Every train that departs Clarence Station is powered by an incredible team of people.
Some are qualified locomotive crew. Some work behind the scenes maintaining rolling stock and infrastructure. Others welcome visitors, serve coffee, sell souvenirs, plan events, manage bookings, mow lawns, repair buildings, write grants, or help tell the story of Australia’s railway heritage.
Together, they keep one of Australia’s most loved heritage railways operating for future generations.
At Zig Zag Railway, we’re always looking for people who share our passion for heritage, tourism, hospitality, community and railways.
No matter your background or experience, there may be a role that’s right for you.
RAIL OPERATIONS CREW
Help operate a living, working heritage railway. From station duties and train operations to signalling and locomotive crews, Rail Operations volunteers play a vital role in delivering a safe and memorable experience for our visitors. Full training is provided, and no previous railway experience is required.
INFRASTRUCTURE & WORKSHOP
Infrastructure & Workshop Warriors
Keep the railway running behind the scenes. From restoring historic locomotives and carriages to maintaining track, buildings, gardens and facilities, our Infrastructure & Workshop Warriors preserve the railway’s past while helping build its future. No matter your skill level, there’s always something to learn and contribute.
FOOD & BEVERAGE CREW
Help keep our visitors fuelled for their journey. From preparing meals and serving coffee to creating memorable hospitality experiences, our Food & Beverage Crew plays an important role in every visit to Zig Zag Railway. Opportunities are available in both volunteer and paid roles.
GUEST SERVICES CREW
Be the friendly face of Zig Zag Railway. From welcoming visitors and checking tickets to assisting with retail sales and answering questions, our Guest Services Crew helps create exceptional experiences from arrival to departure. Opportunities are available in both volunteer and paid roles.
NEXT GEN CREW
For young people aged 10 and over, Next Gen is a chance to learn new skills, make friends and experience the excitement of being part of a working heritage railway. Whether your interests are train operations, workshop and infrastructure projects, events, customer service or hands-on restoration work, there’s a place for you in the next generation of Zig Zag Railway volunteers.
