Keeping the Tracks in Top Shape: Planned Maintenance Period 7–18 September

At Zig Zag Railway, keeping our passengers safe and our heritage infrastructure in the best possible condition isn’t something we leave to chance. It’s something we plan for carefully, proactively, and with the same pride we bring to every journey through the Blue Mountains.

That’s why from Monday 7 September to Friday 18 September, our dedicated team will be rolling up their sleeves for a scheduled maintenance period across the railway.

What are we working on?

This isn’t just routine tick-the-box stuff. Our crews will be working across four key areas:

  • Signals Maintenance – keeping our signalling systems safe and reliable
  • Permanent Way (Track Maintenance) – inspecting and maintaining the track infrastructure that makes every ride possible
  • Rolling Stock Maintenance – giving our locomotives and carriages the care they deserve
  • Non-Rail Infrastructure – looking after the wider site so your visit is as enjoyable as ever

All of this work is part of our proactive approach to safety and the high operational standards that have made Zig Zag Railway one of NSW’s most loved heritage experiences.

What’s running during the maintenance period?

We know many of you plan your visits well in advance, so here’s exactly what to expect:

Our diesel services will run as normal every day throughout the maintenance period, from Monday 7 September through to Friday 18 September. Steam services are the ones being paused while our team carries out this work, on the following schedule:

Date Operations
Monday 7 September Morning steam services are running as usual (10:30am and 11:30am). No steam from 2pm.
Tuesday 8 September – Friday 11 September Steam paused (until midnight Friday 11 September)
Saturday 12 September onwards Steam back in action, services resume as usual

If you’re planning a visit and have been looking forward to a steam experience, we’d recommend booking from Saturday 12 September when we’re back to full steam. In the meantime, our diesel services still offer the full Zig Zag heritage experience: the same stunning scenery, the same historic track, the same journey through the Blue Mountains. Diesel just tells a different chapter of the same story.

We know a shutdown period isn’t ideal timing for everyone, and we appreciate your patience while we carry out this work. Giving you as much notice as possible is important to us, so please plan your visit accordingly.

This work matters because it protects what makes Zig Zag Railway special: a safe, well-maintained heritage line that will keep running for generations to come. Every inspection and repair is part of looking after both our passengers and this piece of NSW history.

We appreciate your understanding and patience, this work is what keeps the magic of the Zig Zag alive for years to come.
