Clarence Station Scales

Within the Clarence Station building you will see proudly displayed a beautifully restored set of station scales, representative of those used within NSW Railways. This particular set was generously donated to the Zig Zag Railway by the Griffiths family. A plaque on the scales reads

“Kindly Donated by Peter, Regina, Charley GRIFFITHS 2022”.

The family transport business, Griffiths Transport commenced in the mid-late 60’s transporting coal from the Lithgow and Seven Valleys Region and although some of the family now live away from our region, the family have maintained a connection with the local area. On 16/09/23 the railway was honoured to be visited by members of the family.

The scales were discovered by Gary Griffiths Snr at his auto wrecking yard in Batemans Bay NSW around 2005/6. Gary Griffiths Jnr arranged for the scales to be fully restored in 2015, and after much planning the scales were transported to the railway and installed in the refurbished station building at Clarence for reopening in May 2023.

The scales bear the mark

“W. & T. AVERY” “MAKERS” “LONDON &” “BIRMINGHAM”.
