Another major milestone ticked off
Significant progress has been made on Locomotive 218, with the tender’s repairs and inspections now complete and the wheels heading back in.
The tender plays a critical role in a steam locomotive’s operation, carrying the fuel and water that keep her moving. Ensuring its structural integrity, braking components and running gear are in top condition is essential before reassembly can begin.
Over recent weeks, the workshop team has carefully inspected and serviced every key component, from bolts and bearings to brake systems, methodically working through each element to ensure it meets the standards required for safe operation. With inspections complete and repairs finalised, the refitting of the wheelsets marks a significant step forward in the restoration timeline.
Reinstallation is always a rewarding moment. It signals a transition from dismantling and assessment to rebuilding and renewal.
Every bolt, bearing and brake tells part of 218’s long story. Now, with this milestone achieved, her next chapter is well underway and the rails are drawing closer.
