Workshop Chronicles: Driving Wheel Removal

One step closer to the rails.

Today’s focus in the workshop was the removal of Steam Engine 218’s driving wheels, a significant milestone in the inspection and repair process.

Removing driving wheels is no small task. Each component must be carefully supported, aligned and released to ensure the integrity of both the wheel and the surrounding motion. Once removed, the wheels can be thoroughly inspected for wear, damage and alignment before any necessary repairs are carried out.

This work is methodical and exacting, but essential. Driving wheels are at the heart of a steam locomotive’s performance, transferring power from the pistons to the rails. Ensuring they are in optimal condition is critical to both safety and smooth operation.

With these wheels now off the locomotive and undergoing inspection, Steam Engine 218 moves one step closer to returning to service and to getting back on track where she belongs.
