At Zig Zag Railway, keeping our passengers safe and our heritage infrastructure in the best possible condition isn’t something we leave to chance. It’s something we plan for carefully, proactively, and with the same pride we bring to every journey through the Blue Mountains.
That’s why from Monday 22 June to Friday 26 June, our dedicated team will be rolling up their sleeves for a scheduled maintenance period across the railway.
What are we working on?
This isn’t just routine tick-the-box stuff. Our crews will be working across four key areas:
- Signals Maintenance – keeping our signalling systems safe and reliable
- Permanent Way (Track Maintenance) – inspecting and maintaining the track infrastructure that makes every ride possible
- Rolling Stock Maintenance – giving our locomotives and carriages the care they deserve
- Non-Rail Infrastructure – looking after the wider site so your visit is as enjoyable as ever
All of this work is part of our proactive approach to safety and the high operational standards that have made Zig Zag Railway one of NSW’s most loved heritage experiences.
What’s running during the maintenance period?
We know many of you plan your visits well in advance, so here’s exactly what to expect:
| Date | Operations |
| Monday 22 June | Diesel services running. No steam. |
| Tuesday 23 June | Full closure – no services |
| Wednesday 24 June | Full closure – no services |
| Thursday 25 June | Diesel services running. No steam. |
| Friday 26 June | Diesel services running. No steam. |
If you’re planning a visit and have been looking forward to a steam experience, we’d recommend booking from Saturday 27 June when we’re back to full steam. That said, our diesel services running on 22, 25 and 26 June still offer the full Zig Zag heritage experience – the same stunning scenery, the same historic track, the same journey through the Blue Mountains. Diesel just tells a different chapter of the same story.
We appreciate your understanding and patience, this work is what keeps the magic of the Zig Zag alive for years to come.
